AB OBJECTIVE: To develop an economic and efficient evaluation tool for
talks about AIDS and prevention in the multi ethnic state Oaxaca.
METHODS: Before and after a slide session a questionnaire consisting of
two identical parts with 8 items about basic knowledge was given to 5
groups with 164 participants: 47 students in Oaxaca, 50 students in
Juchitan, 32 housewifes and 23 teachers from Oaxaca, 12 health promoters
from rural areas. RESULTS: The impact on the whole group varied from an
increase of 6.7% for the item diagnoses to 31.1% for the item
prevention. The two student groups had the best response and achieved a
high information level (at least 70% correct answers). Teachers and
housewifes were already well informed before the talk but did not
process the given information about the condom. The promoters with the
lowest preinformation level did not attain sufficient knowledge.
CONCLUSIONS: 1. Evaluation groups can provide useful information on the
impact of the talks. 2. The questionnaire is an inexpensive and
efficient way to prove the change in knowledge of different groups. 3.
For students the present method of informing them works adequately while
in urban adults acceptance of the condom has to be increased. 4. The
poor response of participants from rural areas demands a modification
allowing for the needs of different ethnic and social groups.
